“We return thanks to our mother, the earth, which sustains us.
We return thanks to the rivers and streams, which supply us with
water.
We return thanks to all herbs, which furnish medicines for the cure
of our diseases.
We return thanks to the moon and stars, which have given to us their
light when the sun was gone.
We return thanks to the sun, that has looked upon the earth with a
beneficent eye.
Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit, in Whom is embodied all
goodness, and Who directs all things for the good of Her children”
~Iroquois Prayer, adapted
Why in the world are we talking about a hippy concept like Mother Earth in relation to infertility?
No, it’s not so that we can all hold hands and skip around a tree. Although frankly, that might be lovely.
“Mother Earth” stripped of all the hippy connotation is simply what enables us to be here i.e. air, water, food, nature, provision, protection etc.
And whatever your religion or beliefs, a connection to Mother Earth can be healing.
I mean this in both a tangible way (i.e being with nature/trees/ocean) and an intangible way (healing our relationship with our own mothers).
Most authors talk exclusively about tangibly connecting with nature if you’re trying to strengthen your 1st Chakra.
And by all means PLEASE go outside. Sit by the ocean and listen to the waves or walk barefoot on the grass. That is so healing.
Especially if you’re overwhelmed with the stress of fertility treatment. Being in nature helps reconnect you to the TRUTH of who you are:
You’re calm. And peaceful. You’re safe, protected and provided for.
Even if that doesn’t feel true, nature helps to gently remind us that it is in fact true. The tangible evidence seen and experienced in nature connects us directly to the Divine.
It is the God’s way of saying:
“HI, I’M HERE. I’M REAL. “And since I’m real, I’m here for you. At any time. I’m here to reconnect with you especially during through those really tough days. All you have to do is place your palms on the Earth.”
But in an intangible sense, the characteristics of Mother Earth are the same characteristics of our human mother.
Namely giving us life itself, nourishment and protection.
The connection between our mothers and ourselves undeniably affect us for life. This relationship with our mother is the first one we have and the success of it determines our security in ourselves and in the world (i.e the strength of our 1st Chakra).
The mother relationship is particularly impactful for women going through infertility. The messages you received from your mother can greatly impact your FEELINGS about infertility.
So we are going to do a healing exercise to get us in touch with these maternal aspects affecting our lives.
1ST EXERCISE: Breaking Family Patterns sounds a little daunting but it’s not at all. In this exercise, we will objectively identify how our parental experience, particularly with our mother, continues to affect our lives and infertility journey.
